Day 7: Pre-forgiveness as a Lifestyle

Day 7: Pre-forgiveness as a Lifestyle

“Then Peter came to Him and said, ‘Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.’”
—Matthew 18:21–22

“Pre-forgiveness is not a one-time act; it is a way of life that keeps your heart free and your spirit light.”
—Dr. Daniel LeBlanc

Pre-forgiveness as a Lifestyle

Pre-forgiveness is not a single decision made during one difficult moment; it is a way of life. It is a daily commitment to keep your heart tender, your spirit free, and your relationships flowing in the grace of God.

When Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone who sinned against him, he suggested seven times. Peter likely believed that forgiving the same person seven times would be exceptionally generous. But Jesus answered, “Seventy times seven.”

Jesus was not asking Peter to keep a record until he reached a specific number. He was revealing that forgiveness should become so deeply established within us that we stop counting offenses.

A heart of pre-forgiveness does not keep a ledger of every wrong. It does not silently calculate how many opportunities someone has left before grace is withdrawn. Instead, it continually draws from the limitless mercy God has extended to us through Christ.

God prepared and provided the way of forgiveness before we ever recognized our need for it. Through the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we can prepare our hearts to extend that same grace before another person ever offends us.

This is what it means to make pre-forgiveness a lifestyle.

Rather than waiting for each offense and then struggling to release it, we establish forgiveness as the settled posture of our hearts. We decide in advance that bitterness will not take root, resentment will not govern our responses, and another person’s failure will not determine the condition of our spirit.

The Holy Spirit continually renews our minds and transforms our hearts. He empowers us to release offenses quickly, resist the temptation to rehearse them, and respond from the character of Christ rather than the impulses of our flesh.

Consider Jesus as He hung upon the cross. While surrounded by mockery, rejection, cruelty, and injustice, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” He did not wait for an apology. His heart remained fixed on the Father’s love rather than on revenge.

The hatred directed toward Jesus could not stop the love flowing from Him.

That same Spirit-empowered love is what God desires to cultivate within us. He is not merely teaching us how to forgive occasionally; He is transforming us into people whose hearts are prepared to forgive continually.

Living this way does not mean that harmful behavior should be tolerated, wisdom should be abandoned, or healthy boundaries should be ignored. Pre-forgiveness does not remove accountability. It removes bitterness. It allows us to address wrongdoing without allowing wrongdoing to possess our hearts.

When pre-forgiveness becomes a daily practice, we are no longer chained to yesterday’s wounds, disappointments, or grudges. We stop carrying old offenses into new conversations and past pain into present relationships.

Instead, we experience the freedom of living with an open heart. We can love without keeping score, extend mercy without demanding emotional repayment, and confront difficult situations without surrendering our peace.

A lifestyle of pre-forgiveness keeps your spirit light because you are no longer carrying the weight of everyone else’s mistakes. You place each person, each wound, and each unresolved situation into the hands of God.

You trust Him with justice. You trust Him with healing. You trust Him with the outcome.

Pre-forgiveness becomes more than something you practice after reading a devotional or hearing a sermon. It becomes the atmosphere in which you live. It shapes your thoughts, governs your reactions, influences your conversations, and protects your relationships.

Your challenge today is to make a settled declaration within your heart:

“By the power of the Holy Spirit, I will live prepared to forgive. I will not keep score, rehearse offenses, or allow bitterness to take root within me. Pre-forgiveness will become my way of life.”

Do not wait for the next offense to decide how you will respond. Decide today that grace will be your first response, love will be your guiding force, and freedom will be your daily portion.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for preparing and providing forgiveness for me through Jesus Christ. Because I have freely received Your mercy, help me freely extend mercy to others.

Today, I choose to make pre-forgiveness a part of my daily life—not merely an occasional act, but the settled posture of my heart.

Holy Spirit, renew my mind and transform my responses. Empower me to release offenses quickly, refuse to keep score, and love without demanding repayment. Guard my heart from bitterness, resentment, anger, and the desire for revenge.

Establish a lasting declaration within me that I will live prepared to forgive. When disappointment comes, remind me of Your grace. When harsh words are spoken, keep my spirit tender. When I am treated unfairly, help me trust You as my defender and source of justice.

Give me wisdom to establish healthy boundaries without building walls of resentment. Teach me to address wrongdoing with truth while keeping my heart free from bitterness.

Let pre-forgiveness become the atmosphere of my life. May it shape my thoughts, guide my words, strengthen my relationships, and reveal the heart of Christ through me.

Fill me with Your peace, freedom, and love. Keep my heart free and my spirit light as I walk daily in the transforming power of Your grace.

In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
